Net worth percentile

What is a net worth percentile?

A net worth percentile is the share of households in a population that have a lower net worth than a given figure, so a net worth at the 75th percentile exceeds that of three-quarters of households.

Percentiles describe wealth distributions far better than averages do, because wealth has a long right tail. In the 2022 Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, mean US family net worth was $1,063,700 while the median was $192,900 — the mean sits above roughly three-quarters of families, pulled up by the top of the distribution. Quoting the mean to somebody as a benchmark tells them they are behind a number almost nobody has.

Percentiles are always relative to a specific population and a specific definition. A 90th-percentile figure for all US households is a different number from a 90th-percentile figure for US households under 35, and both differ from the British equivalent — partly because the countries are different and partly because their statistics offices count wealth differently.

Age is the largest single confounder. Net worth accumulates over a working life, so comparing a 28-year-old to the all-ages distribution measures how old they are more than how they are doing. Per the 2022 SCF, median US family net worth is $39,000 under 35 and $364,500 for 55 to 64 — nearly a tenfold difference driven mostly by time.

Worked example. A US household with $658,340 sits at roughly the 75th percentile of the 2022 distribution, per DQYDJ's computation over the Federal Reserve's public SCF microdata.

Frequently asked questions

What net worth puts you in the top 1% in the US?
Roughly $13.7 million on the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, per DQYDJ's computation over the Federal Reserve's public microdata. The Federal Reserve publishes medians and means by age; it does not publish this threshold itself.
Can you compare net worth percentiles across countries?
Not directly. Britain's ONS counts private pension wealth within total wealth; the American SCF excludes the capitalised value of Social Security and defined-benefit pensions entirely. Converting currencies does not reconcile definitions that are measuring different things.

The SCF runs every three years. The 2025 wave has been collected but is not published until late 2026, so 2022 remains the current release. SCF net worth excludes the capitalised value of future Social Security and defined-benefit pension entitlements.

A third-party computation over the Federal Reserve's public SCF microdata, not a Federal Reserve publication. The Fed publishes medians and means by age; it does not publish these percentile thresholds directly.
